The Sharpmaker isn't for regrinding an edge; it's for putting a micro bevel on one. Used that way, a dull work knife is back to shaving sharp in under five minutes.

You know the situation. The work knife stopped cutting a while ago, stropping does nothing, a professional sharpener means waiting a week, and sharpening it yourself never gets back that shaving feel. You read guides, watch videos, buy a stone, and quietly give up. The Sharpmaker solves a good chunk of that.

Why I keep recommending it

Talking to other carriers, most of them want to sharpen their own knives, and I always say the same thing: just put a micro bevel on it with a Sharpmaker. Then comes the question: is the Sharpmaker actually any good? Answer: extremely convenient, if you use it the right way.

• It holds the angle for you, no more guessing how many degrees.
• The triangular ceramic corners handle serrations as well as plain edges.
• The whole set stores in its base: small, clean, out of the way.

How I actually use it

The Sharpmaker's value isn't changing angles or regrinding a bevel; it's maintenance. I use it for one thing: adding a micro bevel so the edge is back to shaving sharpness in the shortest possible time.

The condition for that: the micro bevel has to sit about 3–4° per side above the existing angle. That's exactly why I recommend it to Spyderco owners: the factory grind lands around 16–17° per side, so the 40° setting is right there.

• Set the Sharpmaker to 40° (20° per side).
• Start on the brown rods: 10–20 light passes per side. Switch to white: 15–20 per side.
• Finish with 2–4 feather-light passes per side. Under five minutes; a couple of strops after and it's back to shaving.

What the testing showed

Across more than sixty steels, the only two the Sharpmaker cannot work usefully on are tungsten carbide and ceramic. High-wear, high-hardness steels (Maxamet, HAP72, ZDP-189, 15V) all took a stable micro bevel in our testing.

For sharpness: with a 12°-per-side thinning grind and a micro bevel at 15° or 20° per side, following the brown-then-white-then-strop routine, every steel reached a shaving-capable edge. On sharpness alone, the Sharpmaker satisfies completely.

On angles: 20° per side covers the stable range for nearly every steel we tested. 15° per side suits the tougher, higher-toughness steels.

Cleaning

When the rods start feeling slick and going grey, they're loaded with metal swarf. Baking soda and dish soap, or a pencil eraser, brings them back. How clean the rods are decides how fast they cut; sharpen one knife after cleaning and you feel the difference immediately.

Against other systems

Two years in

It's the sharpening tool I reach for most. Not flashy, not complicated, and it gets a knife back to usable in the least time. Fast, repeatable, serration-friendly; poor at regrinding, and the ceramic rods need cleaning.
