Sharpmaker exists because Sal Glesser wanted to take the mystery out of sharpening. A few minutes of practice, and anyone can put an edge back on a knife.
First we made things sharp, then we made sharp things.
If one sharpener has earned the word classic, it's the Sharpmaker. The system came out of a simple idea of founder Sal Glesser's: take the mystery out of sharpening so that anyone, after a few minutes of practice, can put a working edge back on a blade.
1978: the idea, and a converted bread van
Sal was driving a converted bread delivery van, the whole family living off small sharpening accessories sold at fairs. In October 1978 the first Tri-Angle Sharpmaker, Model 201, was shown at the State Fair of Texas: a narrow base, two brass guard rods, a fixed 40° angle. Simple, but it solved the two things that stop most people: an unsteady hand and an angle you can't hold.
The triangular rods were the other decision. A corner sharpens a plain edge and reaches into serrations, so one set of stones covered both. That choice moved the market and became a Spyderco signature.
Late 1970s: Model 202 gets steadier
The 202 added flanges to the base, which widened the footprint and steadied the whole thing. A small run of specials appeared too: roughly 500 blue-base "Hawaii" units, a marketing experiment more than a product line.
1980–1990: the 203 series
The 203 series broadened the system: medium and fine rods, diamond rods, a 12.5° setting for scissors, and the 203DX as a diamond-accelerated kit.
Today: the 204MF
The 204MF is the mature version. Lighter, with keyed 30° and 40° slots that seat firmly, aluminium safety guard rods, and medium plus fine rods that store inside the base. If you want it faster, add diamond or CBN rods.
Forty-seven years, one idea
From the 201 at a state fair to the 204MF on a kitchen counter, the Sharpmaker has been through four decades of revision, and the idea never changed: consistent sharpness, within anyone's reach. It isn't only a sharpener; it's Spyderco's temperament in a plastic base: grind the practical and the inventive until both are sharp.

The verdict
Not the most capable sharpening system on the market, and never claimed to be. It is the one that got a whole generation to actually sharpen their knives.
