Starting your EDC from scratch: the three-tier rule
從零開始建立 EDC:三層法則
Only about 20% of what you carry really matters. The three-tier rule is how you find out which 20%.
Have you ever felt like your bag just keeps getting heavier? You got a bigger one, only to end up carrying more. Eventually you've had enough and sit down to declutter, and somewhere deep inside the bag you find something you thought you lost weeks ago.
That's happened to me more than once. I rotate bags a lot depending on the day, and things get buried. But every teardown gave me something else: clarity.
According to the Pareto principle, only 20% of what we carry really matters. The rest? "Just in case" items, or nice things to have but rarely touched.
The three tiers of carry
After digging through forums and talking to a lot of people, from hikers to EDC nerds, most carry items sort into three simple tiers. Think of Tier 1 as must have, Tier 2 as good to have, Tier 3 as nice to have. The fewer items in Tiers 2 and 3, the lighter the load.
| Tier | What it is | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Core essentials: forget these and the day falls apart | Phone, house key, wallet, ID |
| Tier 2 | Context-based: not essential, but they save time, money or stress | Umbrella, charger, meds, earbuds |
| Tier 3 | Nice to have: rarely used, but they reflect who you are | Fancy pen, perfume, lucky coin |
Why Tier 2 versus Tier 3 feels tricky
As Barry Schwartz explains in The Paradox of Choice, too many options make us feel like we need everything. Nice to have turns into maybe I'll need it, and the bag gets heavier.
The three-question filter
- Have I used this item in the past three days?
- Do I need it in my current environment?
- Would not having it today make my day harder, more expensive, or more stressful?
You can always edit a bad page. You can't edit a blank page.
It's easier to improve something you've already started than to build from nothing. Begin with your current kit, run the filter, and fine-tune week by week. Your bag will feel lighter, your choices clearer, and your carry truly yours.
Who it's for
- Anyone whose bag keeps getting heavier.
- New carriers who don't know where to start.
- People who like a system more than a shopping list.
Who it's not for
- Readers looking for specific product picks.
- Anyone who enjoys carrying everything and isn't bothered by the weight.
| Tier 1 | Core essentials: phone, keys, wallet, ID |
|---|---|
| Tier 2 | Context-based: umbrella, charger, meds, earbuds |
| Tier 3 | Nice to have: fancy pen, perfume, lucky coin |
| Filter | Three questions; all yes = Tier 2 |
The verdict
Carrying less isn't about stripping out everything personal; it's keeping what matters and letting the rest go. And keep some Tier 3: sometimes the odd item is the reason you get through the day smiling.
